2007 Artichoke Festival Parade


The 49th Annual Artichoke Festival Parade is Sunday the 18th, 2008 starting at 9:45 A.M. on Merritt St.

The festival committee is dedicated to developing another exciting Artichoke Festival, along with a bigger and better parade.

Mark your calendar for the third weekend of May and make plans to visit the beautiful Monterey Peninsula for another action-packed week. This year we have added new categories to better represent the interest of parade applicants. Our Festival and Parade theme is "Going Green and Global "


Our sanctioned parade, one of the largest and most colorful of its kind and will once again be judged by the Pacific Coast Judges Association. PCJA guidelines and general definitions will be followed (please refer to the right side of the page Parade Category List to help you enter your group in the correct class category).

Rules/Info

  • Entry deadline for parade applications is May 1, 2008. Late entries may be accepted upon the approval of the parade committee, but will require a late entry fee of $10.00 per entry. There is NO entry fee for applications received by May 1, 2008.
  • This is a FORWARD MOTION PARADE. Continuous forward motion will be required at all times. Stopping for performance WILL NOT be allowed in front of the judging or review stands.
  • For the benefit of all of the parade spectators, please perform all along the parade route.
  • Registration on parade day starts at 7:30 a.m. Parade line-up will be NO LATER THAN 9:00 A.M..
  • Parade starts at 9:45 a.m., sharp. Units not in position will be placed in the last division and be subject to penalty points.

  • Seventy-five feet spacing between units will be observed.

  • All units must complete the Parade route. Those not doing so will be disqualified from the competition.
  • Parade safety requires that no material may be thrown, discarded, or sprayed by or from any parade unit. Entries must at all times maintain control of their vehicles, animals, etc.

  • Floats must carry a fire extinguisher on the left side ready for emergencies.
  • Units with sound or unusual noise must so indicate on the entry form. Sound amplifying systems shall maintain a sound volume which will not interfere with other units. NO offensive music may be played during the parade.
  • No entry may appear in the parade more than one time for competition, regardless of change in name or appearance.
  • All entries must follow directions from authorized parade officials.
  • Parade participants shall not drink alcoholic beverages before or during the parade.
  • Distance for parade competition is 100 feet, with the judges' stand on the right side of the line of march and centered within the competition distance. This judging area will be clearly market. Set-up time before entering the judging area should not exceed 15 seconds; set-up time for bands should not exceed 30 seconds.
  • Forward motion rule for bands or drill teams: each unit must maintain general forward motion, with at least one member maintaining forward movement at all times.

THIS PARADE WILL USE THE PACIFIC COAST JUDGES ASSOCIATION FOLLOWING GUIDELINES:

  • Individual entries consist of one participant, a group is two or more participants.
  • Senior category is 14 years and older (one 14 year old in a group constitutes a senior unit). Junior category is 13 years or younger.
  • Drum Major is an individual performing as a leader or drum major of a marching musical group. Drum Major with a junior high, middle, or elementary school band is a junior Drum Major.
  • Antique / Vintage autos 1916 - 1965.
  • Car Club, an organization with 3 or more vehicles, judged as a single entry.
  • Novelty, a group or individual entry whose participation is solely geared to the entertainment of the spectators.
  • Other Miscellaneous, this classification can be included for entries that do not fit the description of any other classification.
  • Theme Sweepstakes Trophy The sweepstakes winner is chosen by the judges as the most outstanding entry or organization in the parade for the best overall theme depiction.
All entries are considered for the sweepstakes award, regardless of their placement in individual categories.
